Bezel Set Engagement Rings: Are They Right For You?

When you think of diamond rings, it is probably the traditional prong setting that comes to mind, right?  But this isn't your only option.  In fact, bezel set engagement rings have a totally different style and appearance than prong settings, and they may be a much better choice for your ring.

What Are Bezel Set Engagement Rings?

A bezel set engagement ring uses a less traditional method of holding the diamond in place. In the typical prong setting, three or more thin metal prongs are fastened over the diamond's edge. In a bezel setting, a single piece of metal, is folded and pressed down all the way around the diamond's edges. This creates a circle (or square, or oval) of metal, with the diamond securely placed in the middle.

Another option is a half bezel engagement ring, or a partial bezel. In the regular bezel setting, the metal rim goes around the entire circumference of the diamond. In half or partial bezel settings, the rim only goes around part of the circumference, allowing more light in, and allowing some of the diamond's sides and edges to be visible.

The bezel setting makes a big difference in the appearance of the ring, as well. These rings tend to look a bit more modern and streamlined. They are often of a simpler and less glamorous design, and instead have a subtle and elegant beauty to them.

Bezel Set Engagement Rings vs. Traditional Prong Settings

There are some big differences between bezel setting engagement rings and prong setting engagement rings.  Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

With the traditional prong setting, one of the big disadvantages is the security of the setting.  Since the prongs are thin, they are more easily damaged, and can come loose.  Often, prong set rings need to be taken to a jeweler for readjusting and tightening.  Otherwise, the diamond could become loose in the setting and could even fall out if the ring is struck.

Bezel setting hold the diamond in place much more securely.  With a full bezel setting, it is virtually impossible for the diamond to fall out, because the rim wraps all the way around it.  Even partial bezels are much more secure, and require a lot less checking and adjustment than prong settings do.

Another disadvantage of prongs is that they stick out more and can more easily get caught on things.  This may not be an issue for some women, but others may find it a big inconvenience.  The bezel setting is much more streamlined, without any sharp or protruding edges.  For women who wear gloves often, or who frequently work with their hands, a bezel setting may be a more practical option.

However, there are some disadvantages to the bezel setting as well.  First, since it covers the diamond's edges, it can make the gemstone appear smaller.  Another disadvantage is that a bezel set diamond engagement ring is more difficult to clean, because the bezel can trap dirt and grime more easily than a prong setting can.

Is A Bezel Set Engagement Ring Right For You?

Now that you know what a bezel set engagement ring is, and what advantages and disadvantages it has compared to a prong setting, you can decide if it is right for you.

If you want an engagement ring that you know won't get in the way, and that you won't have to worry about checking and adjusting the setting, the a bezel engagement ring setting is a great choice.

On the other hand, if the size of the diamond, or the brilliance of the sparkle is more important, then you may want to go with a more traditional setting, since the bezel setting can slightly reduce the size and sparkle of a diamond.

Choosing an engagement ring is a big decision.  It's something that you'll ideally wear every day, so it should be a piece of jewelry that fits your lifestyle well.  A bezel set engagement ring can be the perfect choice for you.  It is elegant, sophisticated, as well as attractive and practical.
